Padaviya, Sri Pura, Jayanthipura, Gamunupura, Padaviya Parakkramapura, Sinhapura, Welioya, and Ethawetunuwewa are a few of the villages in Anuradapura District, bordering Eastern Province. Under the colonization scheme of late Mr. D. S. Senanayaka, the first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka started these villages in the 1950 s. By now the population has grown up but accordingly, the basic facilities have not been developed.
Padaviya is the main town and it is 99 km away from the capital city of Anuradapura. Also, this town is on the border of Eastern Province. There is a base hospital in Padaviya, which does not have most of the basic facilities. There was no eye unit in this hospital and the eye patients from these villages had to travel 100 km to 130 km to Anuradapura hospital for treatments.
We donated eye care equipment and the furniture worth SLR 4,000,000.00 to this hospital to start a basic eye unit. With the great effort of the Medical Superintendent of the hospital Dr.(Mrs) Wimalaratne, the eye unit was started on the 6th of August 2020. The Provincial Director of Health – North Central Province, Dr. Palitha Bandara was there to grace the occasion.
Now the eye patients in these villages can get treatments for their eye ailments from this hospital without traveling 100 km to Anuradapura Hospital.
