Sri Lanka is currently experiencing the worst economic crisis in its history. As a result, families in lower economic strata of society have been driven to sheer poverty. While hunger and malnutrition among children in such families is on the rise their parents are finding it difficult to meet their minimum educational needs.
Accordingly,Karuna Trust decided to prioritize addressing hunger among poor children and supporting their educational needs. At the beginning of every year each student need school provisions costing approximately LKR 9,500/- or USD 30/-. Under the present economic circumstances poor parents cannot afford this cost especially those families with more than one child. Increasingly children of some poor families are denied access to education as a result.
Since the inception of Karuna Trust in 2003 it has been engaged in providing school provisions to needy children. In 2022 Karuna Trust
granted school provisions to 1,500 needy students and in 2023 to 2,500 such students. The Trust is targeting to cater to 3,000 needy
students in 2024 and have been successful in identifying qualifying students from remote villages in Anuradapura, Kurunegala, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Colombo and Galle districts.
The cost of each package of school provisions has increased by 40% compared to 2023. Due to the overall economic decline in the
country domestic fund raising has also become difficult unlike in previous years. However, with funds already raised, the Trust is in a
position to cater to 2,500 needy students. Your kind support is solicited to increase the number to 3,000 as targeted.
