Homes for the Homeless
Karuna Trust ventured in to their first community project in 2003 under their flagship project of “A home for the homeless family”. There onwards we have been successful in building 38 houses for deserving homeless families in many parts of the country.
Presently we are building a house for a needy family in the Horana area in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. There are four young girls in this family and the eldest is 17 years. The breadwinner of this family has passed away a few years ago and the mother is going through many hardships to feed the children and maintain the family. Eldest child has studied up to GCE A’ level and is following a vocational training course conducted by the Department of Social Services. The other three children are in Grade 6 and 10 and the youngest is attending nursery.
They live in a small slum where from the kitchen to everything is in one room. They don’t have proper sanitary facilities, electricity or water. They live on rent and the landlord has given notice to vacate the place as they are unable to pay the monthly rent.
We have commenced building a house for this family, under the supervision of the Divisional Secretory(DS), Horana. The land has been allocated by the DS. The house we are building is with one bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and a toilet with supply of water and electricity, it will cost approximately LKR 900,000.00. We have received LKR 438,780.00 from a group of Sri Lankan and Malaysian Buddhists who live in Western Australia.

Karuna Trust is committed to assist and help anyone who is willing to build a home for a homeless family. All houses built by Karuna Trust has always been built under the supervision of the Divisional Secretary of the area and will be continued to do so. 100% of the donations that we receive for this project will be exclusively utilized only for the given purpose .
